The Air Circus 1928

Two brash young men flirt with a pretty woman on their way to aviation school, telling her what good pilots they are. The woman shows up at their school and is a skilled pilot. On his first solo flight, one of the men panics. When he sees that his friend and the woman are in trouble because their plane has mechanical problems, he is able to overcome his fear and rescue them.

Anna Karenina 1915

Saloon girl Trixie takes hard-working miner Steve Denton’s gold and hides a message from his dying mother. The bitter Steve refuses to aid a lost caravan of pioneers until a young girl begs for his help. Her belief that no white man would refuse to help a woman in danger touches Steve and he leads the caravan to safety.


The Battle of Gettysburg 1913

A young woman’s beau fights for the North while her brother fights for the South. All three of their lives are changed by the Battle of Gettysburg, where the Confederate troops led by General George Pickett are defeated. President Lincoln delivers his famous speech.

The vengeful Alvarez starts a rumor that Ernesto and Teodora are having an affair and Don Julian loses his diplomatic appointment. Alvarez seriously wounds Don Julian in a duel. Ernesto then challenges Alvarez to a duel and kills him. Ernesto convinces the dying Don Julian that his wife was indeed faithful.

Revolution breaks out and the king and Frederika abdicate to Paris. Alexei works to restore the King’s power, but the king is jealous of his cousin’s relationship with his wife. Alexei takes the throne and plots to poison the king. Frederika intervenes and saves her husband’s life. Frederika and the king live happily in exile while Alexei rules over a divided Illyria.

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court 1921

He escapes execution when he predicts an eclipse of the sun. He is knighted and defeats Sir Sagramore in a tournament with his lariat. When Marty regains consciousness, he and Betty elope.

In danger from marauding Mexicans, Eliza is rescued by Sam and his friends, the Cherokee Indians.

Elisabeth and Freddie marry and return to the United States and Quimby goes back to his martinis.

A group arrives to rescue Fabienne and Fazil is fatally wounded. Before he dies, Fazil poisons Fabienne and the two are united in death.

Langdon joins the command of General Custer and is able to clear his name when he brings a crooked Indian agent to justice.

Fighting in World War I, a black soldier offers Edward his last bit of water. When the soldier is shot, Edward kisses him on the cheek as he dies. Moved by all he has seen during the war, Edward is reunited with Jeanette.

Fearful of the many obstacles to their relationship, Baptiste moves back East to his family and marries Orlean, a preacher’s daughter. Orlean’s father tries to discredit Baptiste. Unable to stand up to her father, Orlean goes insane, killing her father and herself. Baptiste returns to South Dakota and finds love again with Agnes, who has learned that she is black.

When her attempts to reform him fail, she shoots him in the shoulder to prevent him from taking part in a robbery. They surrender to make amends for their crimes and to start a new life.

This experimental drama opens with a shot of man drowning, his hand reaching out of the water. After a series of very quick shots, the film shows the highlights of the man’s life from childhood until the day he walks into the pond to end his life. He wades in until only his hand is visible. Then the hand sinks below the surface and only bubbles rise to the surface.

Christine and Gale reconcile.

Victor dreams that the man he creates is a soulless monster who goes on a murderous rampage, killing Elizabeth and others close to Victor. When he wakes from the nightmare, Victor destroys his invention.

John Martin is killed by a farmer he ruined but Esther is charged with the murder. The farmer confesses to the murder and Henry returns from the war and reunites with Esther.

Catherine marries Lefebvre but her common ways disturb the court. Napoleon orders the duke to divorce Catherine, but when she reminds him of his unpaid laundry bills, he relents.

Looking for the missing lord, a police inspector arrives and confirms his true identity.

Reporter Al Whitcomb worked his way up from folding newspapers to the newsroom. He loves Vera Worth, the society editor, but Vera is the newspaper owner’s mistress. Al kills the owner in self-defense at Vera’s apartment, but Vera lies at the trial to protect her reputation and social standing. She later recants and Al is set free.

Mockery 1927

During the Russian revolution, Countess Tatiana promises the peasant Sergei food, a job and friendship if he will escort her to Novokursk. Sergei gets the Countess to Novokursk safely but he is given only a menial job as a reward. He grows to despise the Countess and all of the upper class. He attacks the countess during an uprising, but as soldiers are about to kill him, she saves his life because he protected her in the past. He later dies defending her during another rebellion.

One Glorious Day 1922

Professor Ezra Botts is a shy and timid psychology professor who is secretly in love with Molly, his housekeeper’s daughter. During a meeting of the spiritual society that he chairs, Botts goes into a trance and Ek, an aggressive spirit, enters his body. Ek fights and defeats Ben Wadley, a no-good suitor of Molly’s. When Ek leaves the professor’s body, Botts has no memory of what happened during his trance. Botts discovers that Molly loves him and he is nominated for mayor.

The Patriot 1928

Count Pahlen is the only aide Czar Paul trusts. Pahlen knows his friend the Czar is mad and reluctantly plots to remove the ruler from power because of his horrific acts against the Russian people. The Czar is killed and Pahlen shoots himself. As he lays dying, he tells his mistress, “I have been a bad friend and lover-but I have been a patriot.”

A trailer of The Patriot has been restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive. UCLA also holds excerpts from the feature. The Patriot earned five Academy Award nominations (with Hanns Kraly winning an Oscar for his screenplay) and was the last silent film to be nominated for Best Picture. A synchronized musical score and sound effects were added in after production, both against the wishes of director Ernst Lubitsch.

The Queen of Sheba 1921

The River 1928

Young and naïve Allen John Spender travels down the river on his barge. He meets and is attracted to the streetwise Rosalee. When the man gets out of jail and wants Rosalee back, Spender realizes his love for Rosalee. After defeating the former lover, Spender and Rosalee journey on down the river.

rescue and Yegor’s capture, but as Yegor is flogged he sings to her. She realizes his love for her is real. Though they still love each other, Vera and Yegor part, hoping that someday they can be together.

UCLA Film and Television Archive has restored a trailer for Rogue Song as well as a surviving fragment of the Swan ballet choreographed by Albertina Rasch with the Albertina Rasch Dancers

Salome 1918

Salome, the cousin of King Herod, plots the deaths of Prince David and Queen Miriam. John the Baptist denounces King Herod’s reign and is imprisoned. After John the Baptist spurns Salome’s advances, she vows revenge. Salome dances the dance of the seven veils for Herod and asks for the head of John the Baptist. When she kisses the decapitated head, a storm breaks out and a frightened Herod orders Salome’s execution.

The Scarlet Letter 1917

Francesca disguises herself as a caballero and through a series of stunning feats is able to recover the family’s fortune. Ramon’s cousin, Roger, returns from Europe and falls in love with Francesca (out of disguise). After she defeats Ramon is a duel, she must fight Roger. Roger doesn’t recognize her until after he has wounded her. They end the feud.

The arrogant and profligate Cock Robin is a performer in a Hungarian carnival. Cock Robin is also a thief and when the police come after him, he seeks refuge with Salome, another performer in the carnival. Salome writes letters to a blind soldier and her goodness causes Robin to reform. The two fall in love and the Greek manager of the sideshow becomes insanely jealous. He plants a poisonous gila monster in Salome’s room, but the lizard attacks and kills the Greek instead of Robin.

The only bright spot in Selina’s dreary life is her son, Dirk, whom she nicknames “So Big.” After Pervus dies, Selina works hard to make their farm profitable and Dirk becomes an architect. Dirk becomes embroiled in a messy affair with Mrs. Storm and Selina begs Mr. Storm not to name Dirk in the divorce suit. A repentant Dirk reunites with his true love, the artist Dallas.

The police catch Angela and she goes to prison. In love with Angela, Gino becomes despondent and believes that she was not worthy of posing for his portrait. When she is released from prison, Angela sees her portrait hanging in a church. She meets Gino and explains to him why she committed the crime, convincing him that she is indeed an honorable person, honorable enough to pose for the Madonna.

Touched by her goodness, Bill confesses to Elizabeth and decides to reform. Jealous, Annie gives him up to the police. He is shot trying to protect Elizabeth and the children when the gang uses them as a human shield against the police. As he dies, he tells Annie to save her soul by joining the Salvation Army.

Peter is fired and loses Rose. In time Peter manages to clear his name, get his job back, and marry Rose.

Disguising herself, she gets evidence that implicates the gangster George Baretta. A cyclone hits town and Baretta and his gang are all killed. Clarke and Daisy call the governor to pardon Ketlar. Clarke proposes to Daisy and she accepts happily.

When she is accused of poisoning a wealthy merchant, Prince Dimitri serves on her jury. Trying to prove her innocence, he admits he was the cause of her downfall. Katusha is convicted anyway and sentenced to Siberia. The prince and his servant follow her to Siberia. When the commanding officer demands sexual favors from Katusha, the prince kills him in a duel. Katusha jumps in front of the prince to protect him and she too is killed.

Elliott takes the blame to protect his sister, but when she discovers that he is love with Corinne, the sister confesses to her crime. Corinne and John clear their names and find happiness together.

Amos can see the future in his dreams and on the day before his wedding with Molly, he dreams that he will be attacked. He enters a sanatorium for protection, but still Amos is attacked. He is rescued and told he must return to India and his people. Amos reluctantly leaves Molly to fulfill his duty, but he is hopeful because he dreamed that he marries Molly in a Hindu ceremony.
