Classification schemes
Select all cataloging classification schemes in use for cataloging or
shelving resources in your organization.
If a classification or shelving scheme you use is not listed, select
other. For classification or shelving schemes developed in-house, select
in-house instead of other.
A classification scheme is a scheme, usually consisting of numbers or
alphanumeric or other notation that categorizes or subdivides a subject
area or collection of materials. Most classification schemes were originally
intended to organize physical items on the shelf. The result was a unique
shelving location (call number) for each item that facilitated browsing
of material by subject or author.
Hyperlinked definitions are provided for all classification schemes referenced.

Z39.50 compliance
Z39.50 is a search and retrieval protocol that allows disparate search
engines to retrieve common results across disparate catalogs. A Z39.50
catalog will have at a minimum a Z39.50 server installed. Installation
of the server involves mapping query fields (such as author, title, etc.)
to a shared field list (generally Bib-1 or Bib-2). The Z39.50 server will
respond to requests from a Z39.50 client by identifying its version (whether
version 1, 2 or 3) and by exposing its mapped query fields. The “handshake”
between the Z39.50 server and client involves identifying the query search
terms to support as well as the format of the query response, e.g., returning
a fielded MARC record or returning a record with eye-readable fields (author,
title, etc.). Many integrated library systems are Z39.50 compliant. If
you are not certain whether your catalog is Z39.50 compliant, check with
your system administrator.

Open Archives Initiative
MIC will support the mining of data via the Open Archives Initiative
protocol. This protocol responds to requests for data by supplying batched
metadata records according to the parameters of archive ID, datestamp
and collection, or set, ID. MIC will serve as an OAI data provider for
participating organizations to enable collaboration in other activities,
such as grant-funded initiatives that may require collaborative data sharing.
Organizations participating in the MIC union catalog that select “yes”
will be able to offer their records for mining based on datestamp (date
created or updated) and collection identifier.
By selecting "yes," the organization has only to supply the
orgID to an OAI service provider, and that provider will be able to mine
data directly from the MIC for union catalog participation, etc.

Portal ID
MIC
supports the concept of portals, customized to the unique needs of specific
user groups. As portals are added to the MIC site, organizations will
be able to select portals to participate in. The organization's directory
record and catalog records (for union catalog participants) will be available
for search and display via any portal selected by the organization. Currently,
only two portals--archivists and NSDL exist. All participants are automatically
assigned to the archivists' portals. Science alpha implementer archives
are assigned also to the NSDL (national science digital library) portal,
as well as any exclusively science-related organizations. |
